Collecting Stamps

Posted on: August 16th, 2011 by Jessica

Students will read a short article about a boy who collects stamps. Inferential questions are posed to guide students to think about the ways an author conveys information. Three short explanations of various aspects of stamp collecting follow. These rely on critical comprehension components. Students are encouraged to share their thoughts with peers. The activity is available on the primary and intermediate levels. A companion Emergent Reader activity is also available. All correlate with the IRA/NCTE Standard, “Students read a wide range of print and nonprint texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works.”
