Welcome to the first installment of my weekly blog where the primary focus is to provide you more specific detail on what’s available in our Weekly Activity Packet as well as some useful tips and creative ideas for incorporating the topic into your classroom. You might also expect some random musings on my life as an educator, an environmental literacy advocate and mother and grandmother committed to teaching our children their responsibility as an ambassador for our planet. As a Maggie Partner, you are committed to educating our children and I feel it’s important we also hear your voice. I encourage you to weigh in with your comments and thoughts on what’s happening in your classroom and in your community so that we can share your concerns, celebrate and emulate your triumphs and address timely topics here in my weekly blog.
This week I want to hear what you think about “The Sounds of Nature” available at the primary and intermediate level. The idea for this WAP came to me when my husband and I were paddling our kayaks on the Chesapeake Bay looking for a spot to enjoy far from the startling noise of boat engines and screeching jet skis. We reminisced about our times paddling down river in Thailand, Nepal, and Botswana and how much we reveled in the silence of nature, the smooth dip of the paddle in the water, insects alighting on water lilies and the call of birds tucked in the foliage along the riverfront. As I read more about this, I realized there is a clear distinction between noise and sound and this activity will encourage you to think more about that gentle or not so gentle ‘hum’ of your classroom.
I thank you in advance for support of Maggie’s Earth Adventures and my new blog series, posted here on our homepage every Tuesday!
Have a great week!
Dr. Kathy
