As one always enthusiastic about any holiday, today I am especially thrilled to be celebrating America Recycles Day, 24 hours exclusively dedicated to promoting recycling in the United States. Without question, we have dramatically improved our recycling efforts over the years but let’s face it, we still have a LONG way to go and we still waste A LOT. So, celebrate with me by taking this opportunity to evaluate the efforts of your students and see how your kids recycling efforts measure up. As you do every day, educate, empower and inspire your students to make positive changes in their own backyards.
My choice of travel typically mimics that of our own Miss Maggie finding me trekking through some crazy rain forest, traipsing across a savannah or traversing a mountainside. Yet last week my husband and I actually took a ‘funcation’ and spent a few days in Hawaii and though it may sound too domestic, paradise was found! Hawaii followed closely on the heels of the annual NAEYC conference in Orlando, Florida where I spent several incredible days hobnobbing with colleagues from around the country and checking out all the latest and greatest research and practices in the education of our children. I was specifically focused on information as it relates to our emergent readers and our WAP program. And what I discovered during this conference was a shift from the concept of reading “readiness” to learning along a “continuum”. I fully embrace this idea and reject the conventional method of rushing our five year-olds to reach an artificially imposed point in their progress. Do you agree? The NAEYC conference gave me a chance to interact with colleagues, new friends and to meet many of our Maggie Partners live and in person. So buckle up partners, I am refueled, revitalized and raring’ to share all the latest in the education of our young
