Thanksgiving and the Tooty Ta!

Posted on: November 28th, 2011 by Mason

My blessings this turkey day were especially abundant!  Not only did I enjoy the company of my grandson on his first Thanksgiving holiday but I also cheered on my beloved Packers as they trounced the lions and their winning streak continues.  Life is good and I hope you all enjoyed similar joys celebrating with friends and family.

This Thanksgiving many of us celebrated with age old traditions carried on through the generations.  But really, how often do you serve up a huge roast turkey with all the trimmings and seven assorted pies for dessert?  I for one don’t want to look at another pecanpie until 2012.   Yet, other cultures studying how Americans live may believe we eat this way every day!  As we prepare our children to live in an increasingly connected world, the essential components in the study of social studies become even more important, which means studying cultures in their everyday walk of life not just in traditional costume with traditional festive dishes.  This week I encourage you to not only celebrate the uniqueness of other cultures, but to help our children connect with others through our many similarities as well.

To help children realize how alike people are, show them a photo of me doing the “Tooty Ta” in the Botswana classroom. See our Facebook page – http://www.facebook.com/pages/Maggies-Earth-Adventures/85867298875
