Dear Maggie Partners!

Finally, home following a crazy few weeks of traveling where my most recent stop was St. Petersburg.  And to clarify, not the city of Russia fronting the Baltic Sea but St. Petersburg, Florida overlooking Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.  While wandering the shores collecting shells I was taken back to my childhood, visiting my grandparents in the winter.  While everyone else was building sand castles, I was gathering bags of shells to bring back to the house to promptly research
identify and label.  Early on the teacher in me was creating engaging activities on the path to learning!

This week we celebrate Black History Month and here at www.missmaggie.org we are profiling not a past but a current figure of Angola, Africa.  As you learn about “Miguel” you will understand the significance of his story as he serves as a bridge between his country’s tragic history and hopeful future.  Miguel’s historical relevance reminded me that we must impress upon our students that history is not only comprised of names and dates and a litany of facts that must be memorized. History is full of important life lessons and stories like that of Miguel where we can learn in hopes of altering paths in securing a brighter future.  As Maggie’s Earth Adventures partners, you have already demonstrated your commitment to helping our children make a difference as they write their own history. Make sure you visit our “Kids” section and view cartoons, “Herd of Elephants? Part I and II” for more information on the amazing park in Angola where Miguel serves as assistant warden.

I’ve made another dramatic leap in my social networking efforts and am now “tweeting.” Fellow tweeters, I encourage you to follow me @DrKathyHart.  Any related Tweeters I should be following?  Please let me know!
