This week as we prepare to wrap up our 12th year here at Maggie’s Earth Adventures I am overwhelmed by the opportunity this program has provided for my colleagues, our Maggie partners, and me. Our original mission was to expand the world for our students and with the help of all of you, who have made the commitment to share our program, the number of children we have reached has grown exponentially and our mission endures. This week’s activity on the lamprey couldn’t be more appropriate as it illustrates the importance of accepting and understanding differences to recognize the value of others.
I grew up fishing on Lake Superior where I formed very strong opinions of the lamprey as a vile and disgusting, eel-like creature. This week, I still don’t think its flavor profile would be appetizing, but I now recognize the lamprey’s royal contribution throughout history. Check out this week’s activity that goes into more on the time-honored tradition of the lamprey pie for the Queen’s Jubilee.
This is a great opportunity to talk up the important roles tradition plays throughout the world, within cultures, and in individual families. I personally will never be serving lamprey pie at my dinner table, but now I respect those who do!
