Children will read about Captain John Smith’s exploration on the Chesapeake Bay. They will then consider how the Smart Buoys along the John Smith National Water Trail can help scientists and the general public better understand and appreciate the Bay. A table is provided and children use the information to solve basic math problems illustrating the integration of math and science. The concept of math fluency is discussed in the Dear Colleague letter. This activity is available on the primary and intermediate levels and correlates with the Problem Solving and Data Analysis and Probability Strand of NCTM’s National Standards.
