Editing Tips!

I have several ”tricks” when helping children edit papers. For my first graders, I often wore a hat that said, “EDITOR.” I made the point that we all make mistakes and even professional writers have someone read their work. I also view editing as the perfect way to get children in the ‘zone of proximal development.’ To do this, I often include a Post-It on each paper with the number of errors, like this:

Then I have children try to find their own errors. This scaffolds editing in an age-appropriate way. Children know what to look for and you can gradually decrease the hints you give until you are only saying, “find X number of errors.”
