Classify It

Check out your students classification and reasoning skills with the following activity.

• Working with the whole group, ask your students to name every living thing that appears in a book featuring animal habitats. Make a master list with your students.
• Students are then grouped. Each group copies the master list on to individual cards. (Business cards work great. Ask parents to save their old ones for you.)
• Students are instructed to sort their cards in any way they choose. They have to glue their classifications on to separate sheets of paper and title them. Get ready for some original thinking!
• Groups share their work.
• A bulletin board can be created with the students work. Post with an appropriate title.
